Antique Micromosaic Butterfly Pendant

Micromosaic is made from many small adjacent pieces (tesserae) of inlaid varicoloured glass or stone arranged to form a picture or design. For articles of jewelry, the mosaic was usually made in the form of medallions set in brooches, pendants, necklaces, finger rings, ear-rings, parures, etc.

Such work has been done principally in Italy, some being executed with skill and artistry in the 19th century, but many pieces being made in recent years as tourist souvenirs, with large tesserae of stone or glass that are roughly set, and sometimes with some painted portions. Pieces of good quality were mounted in gold frames, including some made by the Casa Castellani in Rome. The fashion for mosaic jewelry in England was mainly in the period 1820-60.

Mosaic work in jewelry was of two types:

Roman or Byzantine mosaic, with the tesserae made of glass, set into molten glass, and fused together
Florentine mosaic. (Venetian mosaic) made of slices of coloured glass canes, usually making a millefiori pattern, was seldom used for pieces of jewelry.

In both types the decorative motifs were often pictorial views of ancient ruins or famous buildings, and in the 1820s Egyptian motifs, but by the mid-l9th century the usual subjects had become more sentimental, e.g. flowers and pet dogs. The Florentine mosaic was imitated in Derbyshire, England, in the late 18th to early 19 century, by using local black marble and feldspar.

Here is a beautiful Georgian ring featuring black enamel and floral motifs in 18kt yellow gold. On the top of the ring, we can read "amitiés" written in French which means friendship. This can be of French of Belgian origin because the hallmark used, a horse head, was used in both countries from about 1831.

Georgian jewelry is rather rare as when time passed most worn out, was melted or taken apart and re-used for more modern designs. Materials like gold, silver and diamonds were very scarce and expensive and little consideration for fine craftmanship was taken with the "old stuff" when the owners wanted to wear their gold and diamonds according to the latest fashion in jewelry.

Besides a little dusting off we didn't have to do anything to offer it in its original beauty. Early 19th century, the ring is very good condition.

Antique late Victorian engagement ring diamonds pearls sapphire

This twisted shaped ring, Circa 1890s, is made of 18 high Carat yellow gold and platinum, although most of this jewel is in yellow gold, the diamonds are set in platinum. In the center, one cut blue sapphire is showcased by two white pearls. The precious stones sparkle among eight simplified rose cut diamond. The ring weighs 3.60 Grams and the finger US size is 5. It is our pleasure to resize the ring for you at our expense. Besides a little dusting off we didn't have to do anything to offer it in its original beauty. Art Nouveau Emil Vernier gold pin lady head floral secret space

The pin we have here is a nice example of the so called Medaillist Art that had a revival in France around 1886. Made (and monogrammed) by E.Vernier we see a woman's head that is depicting spring. Another remarkable fact is that the pin has a hidden place, something that one hardly ever sees with pins.

A similar pin is depicted in the famous "jewelry bible" by Henri Vever "French Jewelry of the Nineteenth Century" in the English translation on page 1048.

17th Century Cross Pendant : Gold & Table Cut Diamonds

We are proud to offer you here this magnificent piece of 17th Century goldsmith craftsmanship. It is amazing that this jewel has survived for over 300 years and still is in this superb condition. The only thing that is not original to it is the brooch-system in the back, which is added to it in a later stage; most probably somewhere in the first half of the 19th Century. The 18 Carats gold has the warm yellowish shine so typical for Southern European 17th Century jewelry. Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe it is of Spanish or Portuguese origin. The solid gold work is beautifully finished and contains no less then 23 table rose cuts (one of the very first versions of rose cuts as we know it today). The cross weighs 17.50 Grams and the height is 57.5 mm (2.26 inch).

A locket is a pendant that opens to reveal a space used for storing a photograph or other small item such as a curl of hair. Lockets are usually given to loved ones on holidays such as Valentine's Day and occasions such as Christenings, weddings and, most noticeably during the Victorian Age, funerals.

Lockets are generally worn on chains around the neck and often hold a photo of the person who gave the locket, or they could form part of a charm bracelet. They come in many shapes such as ovals, hearts and circles and are usually made of precious metals such as gold and silver befitting their status as decorative jewellery.

Lockets usually hold only one or two photographs, but some specially made lockets can hold up to eight. Some lockets have been fashioned as 'spinner' lockets, where the bail that attaches to the necklace chain is attached but not fixed to the locket itself which is free to spin, this was a common style in the Victorian Age.

Keepsake lockets can also be made with a glass pane at the front so that what is inside can be seen without opening the locket. These lockets are generally used for items like locks of hair which could fall out and become lost if the locket was repeatedly opened, whereas photograph lockets are generally enclosed on all sides and the photographs are secured by pieces of clear plastic.

Another kind of locket is/was made in a filigree style with a small cushion in the centre to which a few drops of perfume should be added, perfume lockets were popular in eras when personal hygiene was restricted and sweet smelling perfume was used to mask the odour of a person or their companions.

In the antiquity Eros, the Greek God of Love, was represented as a fresh and rosy (color of roses), lively and cheerful boy with goldish hair (like the stamens). The arrows were like the thorns and his wings were like the petals of the rose. In beauty, shape and scent, the rose is outstanding and hence has become the most commonly used floral symbol in the West. Roses have symbolical meanings in classic and Christian art. For example Venus was associated with roses, symbolizing love and beauty, whereas Virgin Mary sometimes was called a « rose without thorns » because of her purity.

Once upon a time... in the center of the world, in the center of the universe there was a country that, just for this story's sake, we will call France. The people who lived there were romantic as can be. All the things they did had a certain “Je ne sais quoi”. For example “love” they wouldn't simply call it “love” but they called it “ l'amour ”.... awwwhhhh they were so romantic!

From this romantic perspective they invented a special shaped ring, reflecting the intense relationship between two people and they called this ring the “Toi et Moi”... (You and Me). It is not surprising that the Adin Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts has been on the hunt to get these rings into its collection. How to tell a True Princess?

Once upon a time... there was a queen-mother that wanted to check if her future daughter-in-law was the real princess she claimed to be.

She went into the bed-room and hid there a beautiful Art Deco clip. In the morning the princess was asked how she had slept. "Oh, very badly!" said she. "I hardly closed my eyes all night. I felt a presence of sheer beauty."

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that!

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a 'real' princess; and the clip was put in the Adin Museum of Fairy Tale Artifacts, where it may still be seen, provided no one has bought it!

Art Nouveau jewelry (1880-1905)

The style of decoration current in the 1890s and early 1900s, the name being derived from a gallery for interior decoration opened by Samuel Bing in Paris in 1896, called the "Maison de l'Art Nouveau". It was introduced in England circa 1890, mainly as a product of the movement started by William Morris and the pre-Raphaelites, which spread to the Continent and America. It came to an end with the outbreak of World War I.

The same style in Germany was called Jugendstil, after a magazine called Die Jugend(The Youth), in Holland Slaoliestijl (salad oil style) after an advertising for salad oil and in Italy Floreale or Stile Liberty (after the London store that featured it).

Applicable to all the decorative arts, it was adapted to jewelry in England and the Continent. The style resulted from a revolt against the rigid styles of the previously mass-produced wares and a philosophy that sought to revive the craft movement and aestheticism in art. It featured free-flowing, curving lines with asymmetrical natural motifs, such as human, female faces, greatly influenced by Japanese art. It used gemstones to emphasize their beauty, preferring pearls and cabochon opals and moonstones rather than faceted stones, and employed colourful enamelling.The pieces include pendants, necklaces and elaborate hair ornaments. Eventually its own extravagances led to its demise in circa 1910-1914.

Among its leading exponents in France were Rene Lalique, Maison Vever, George Fouquet and Lucien Gaillard; in Belgium Philippe Wolfers and in Vienna Josef Hoffman. In England the leaders were Charles R.Ashbee and Henry Wilson and in Scotland Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

One of the nicest little pendants with plique a jour enamel we have ever seen. French Art Nouveau (ca. 1895-1905) as only the French can make it, refined, tasteful and of superb quality. Too bad we couldn't decipher the remains of the mastermark but we wouldn't be surprised if this beauty was made by one of the famous French jewelers.

Plique-à-jour, (French for "braid letting in daylight") is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It has a stained-glass like appearance and is considered very challanging technically.

Antique Absolute top notch gold filigree earrings, unseen high quality

Without a doubt this must be the nicest pair of filigree earrings we ever had. Hard to tell exactly when they were made but we think somewhere between 1861 and 1886. We do think so because we found some hallmarks that most probably are from the master goldsmith A.Friederichs, who worked between 1861 and 1886 in Oudenbosch, the Netherlands. Clearly visible we see several motives like the Cornucopia (horn of plenty), bird's feathers and per earring five dangling motives that with some imagination could be hanging birds.

The combination of the quality of the craftmanship, the extraordinary length, the splendour of design, and their prestine condition make these earrings so special. Look and enjoy!

This time we present you a ring where, besides the country it was made, we even know the town it was made in. And to be even more precise we think this ring was made in the year 1679.

In many countries in Europe guilds guaranteed the integrity of the jewelry trades. They appointed assay-masters to control the objects made of precious metals checking if the right alloy was used. It is by the hallmarks that we can "read" that the ring was made in Amsterdam in the Netherlands (Holland) some 331 years ago.

Then, out of the blue, about half an hour later, a couple walked into our store and offered us that specific jewel! We didn't have to think twice to add this beauty to our collection. One of our best vintage Art Deco necklace we have with white cream pearls. Three strings of lustrous pearls, strung 'en chute' meaning from small to the closure in the back to big in the front.

The position of the closure is not in the neck opposite of the largest pearl but at "three o'clock". So the closure is visible on the chest when wearing. The closure, in 18 high Carat white gold, holds 32 old mine brilliant cut diamonds with a total estimated weight of .70 Carats.

The necklace weighs 25.60 Grams, the lenght of the closure is 18.20 mm (0.72 inch) and the length of the shortest string is 41.00 cm (16.14 inch). Our expert dates this beaded necklace around 1920s and the condition scale is excellent. Delivered with its authenticity certificate.

Flower symbolism

Flowers are part of our daily life. For virtually every event we have assigned a special flower. Flowers for love, church, church graveyard, marriage, etc. In the 16th century inn's use to have a branch or flower stalk as signboard which later often changed only into the name of a specific tree or flower. Many times one finds flower gardens in mythological sceneries. The allegoric use of flowers is uncountable: attributes for the springtime, the youth, the sunrise, the rhetoric, the virtue etc. Lots of countries carry a flower as national symbol: Hungary had the tulip and Scotland the thistle, etc.

Flowers: etiquette and superstition

Sometimes flower symbolism is narrowed to its tightest form: etiquette and superstition. Rules apply for the color and number of flowers one gives. In this (superstitious) believe it is not done to give black roses or yellow flowers; neither is it done to give 13 flowers; lovers give each other red roses, etc. Also the color of a flower has its own symbolism: white stands for innocence an purity but also for death; red for vitality and blood; blue for mystery and profound devotion and yellow for warmth, sun and gold. In the bible flowers often symbolise beauty and tenderness. And not to forget flowers remember us that all things, no matter how pretty, are subject to decay.

Flowers: universe and archetypes

Flower symbolism is not as evident or simplistic as one might think, in fact one does need some effort to understand. Normally every flower has a different meaning but even different meanings are given to one flower. One of the common characteristics of flower symbolism is that it refers to the female or passive principle of the universal existence. Sometimes flowers, because of their 'star structure' symbolise the son.

Flower wheels

When a flower symbolises eternal force then there can be a lot of comparisons with other symbols. Flowers develop themselves like beams or spokes bursting from out an axle. Therefor it is not surprising that there is a strong symbolic association between symbolical flowers and 'wheels'. A classical example is the wheel, which has a variable number of spokes depending of the traditions and representations but which always wants to express a deeper meaning. The most common wheels are those with six till eight spokes. In this double shape the Celtic wheel survived in the west till the end of the Dark Ages. The same representations (mostly with eight spokes) one will find often in Tibet and India but also in historical sites like Chaldea (southern Babylon - modern southern Iraq) and Assyria (ancient empire in Asia that was at its height between the ninth and seventh centuries BC) . Flowers with, for example, six or eight petals (like the Lily and most Lotus flowers) correspond with six- or eight-spoke wheels. Then the rose is often represented with a various number of petals. In general one could say that five petals symbolises the micro cosmos and six petals the macro cosmos.

Flowers in the western art of painting

In western art of painting flowers claim their place first as decoration but later also as symbol. To people in the 15th century nature seemed to be a forest of symbols, and flowers were, in their eyes, saturated with deeper meanings. Flower symbolism varies in the art of painting depending on era en area and therefore it is almost impossible to find all meanings with certainty. Omnipresent and known by most people is the lily as symbol for purity. The lily-of-the-valley is a known symbol for humility or modesty, the rose for love or sometimes discretion. Therefore one can find roses carved in the confessional boxes to symbolize the secret of the confessional. The thorns of the rose symbolize the children of Adam under the burden of sin. The daisy symbolized compassion, the violet modesty, the buttercup to show a non-marital status, a big violet meditation, the hogweed mildness, the apple the disobedience, the ear of wheat (among others) Eucharistic and the creeping cinquefoil symbolized affection. In the Dark Ages people really understood the allegoric language of the flowers but later that notion diminished. Flowers often are added to portraits and sometimes they still play a symbolic role, but from the 16th century and up they are mostly used as decoration.

Flowers and religion

Flowers have played an important role through the ages in the religious ceremonies of many nations. On rolls from Assyria and on Egyptian temples plants are depicted. The idea is that some like the Lotus and date palm had a ritual role. In the Aztec civilisation flower gardens were not only made to please the eyes of the people, artists and gods, they also contained many images and phases from the history of the beginning of the cosmos.

Taoism knows the "golden flower" growing out of a skull, symbolising the highest mystical enlightening and has the same symbolic meaning as a life elixir. De flowering itself is the returning to the Centre, the Unity, the original status. In the Hindu ritual the flower ('pushpa') resembles with the element ether. In Hinduism as well as Buddhism the lotus flower is a very important symbol.

In the ancient world (and also later in the Christian faith) flowers symbolised the springtime, they were seen as the children of light. The Latin 'flos' and the Greek 'anthos' means both flowering as inflorescence. Flowers were abundantly diverted over floors and used in wreaths and garlands. It was customary to throw flowers and leaves to a winner of a contest. Every February in Greece they had a "festival of the first flowers" ('anthesterien'). Flowers, in the Greek mythology are closely connected to the faith of lots of gods and heroes.

The Celts and Old Germans thought that flowers (just as trees, stars and water) had a soul. Flowers were used to decorate temples, altars, pillars, gods, heroes, priests, sacrifices and victims. Little is known of the Celtic symbolism of flowers. But from the Old Germans lots of meanings are still known. The May month was for the Old Germans the time when Wodan/Odin returned from his honeymoon and together with his wife he brought back sunshine and the splendour of the flowers. They erected in the middle of a forest under old trees an altar and decorated it with fresh spring time green flowers and leaves. With the christianising of the German areas they hang holy statures to those former sacred trees, especially the statue of Maria. In the 17th century the month when the blossoms come out was dedicated to Maria and since then May is called "Maria-month".

Also the Romans dedicated the third year of their month (May) to the flower goddess Maia. Many Hebrew sarcophagi have decorations of flowers or contain mummified flowers. One botanist once recognised 46 sorts (poppy, pumpkin, larkspur, daisy, pomegranate etc.) In the biblical symbolism flowers play important roles: they symbolise the mortality and transitoriness of all earthly things and the shortness of the human existence on earth.

Just as there are alternatives with birthstones, there are also alternatives with birth flowers. For example, October is often listed as Calendula (Marigold) , but is also occasional noted as being rose or camellia.

Flowers and eroticism

Sometimes flowers are the symbol for lust and eroticism. Examples can be found with the Romans (the female genitals they called a rose), the Maya's (the 'nicté'-blossom = Plumeria or Apocynaneae). In the Middle Ages, the rose in the 'Roman de la rose' and on playing cards (together with acorns) had a distinct erotic meaning. Still in many languages the female genitals are called "flower".

Red Currant Cheesecake

For the Filling:
8 small jam filled Swiss rolls, cut into thick slices
1800 g mascarpone
16 tbsp red currant jelly, melted
900 g caster sugar
16 medium eggs, separated
1200 ml whipping cream
120 g powdered gelatine
24 tbsp water
920 g red currants, washed

For the topping:
1200 ml whipping cream

For Decoration:
400 g red currants, washed
1 antique ring

Method:
Arrange the roll slices in the bottom of a greased springform, making sure that they completely cover the bottom.
Filling:
Soften the cheese in a large mixing bowl. Beat in the red currant jelly, half of the sugar, the egg yolks and cream.
Combine gelatine and water in a small saucepan and stir until the gelatine has dissolved and then beat the gelatine into the cheese mixture. Remove from heat and leave to set.
Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then whisk in the remaining sugar. Fold into the cheese mixture and add the currants. Toss to combine and then spoon the mixture into the prepared springform. Chill for 3 hours.

Topping:
Whip the cream until stiff and pipe or swirl on top of the cheesecake.

Decorate with red currants and finish with pictured ring. Succes guaranteed!

Orange Paprika Summer Soup

Ingredients:
1 kilo orange paprika’s
½ kilo carrots
little bulb fresh ginger
one onion
poultry stock

For decoration:
sour cream
fresh chervil
as many antique rings as you wish

Method:
process the paprika, carrots and ginger through a juice extractor
cut up the onion and fry in olive oil
add the juice and stock
(no need to add water)
boil for a bit
spice up with salt, pepper and a pinch of cayenne pepper

Serve:
hot or cold with sour cream and chervil on top and antique ring(s) aside.

A lot can be said about serpents (or snakes). They have been worshiped since the Dark Ages and are a powerful religious symbol with many different meanings, like death and resurrection, while they have also been associated with healing and rivergods and also denote fertility, wisdom and the ability to cure. In jewelry serpents are depicted both for decorative as symbolic reasons.

Serpent is a word of Greek origin (from the Latin serpens, serpentis) that is commonly used in a specifically mythic or religious context, signifying a snake that is to be regarded not as a mundane natural phenomenon nor as an object of scientific zoology, but as the bearer of some symbolic value.

The serpent is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. Considerable overlap exists in the symbolic values that serpents represent in various cultures. Some such overlap is due to the common historical ancestry of contemporary symbols. Much of the overlap, however, is traceable to the common biological characteristics of snakes.

In some instances, serpents serve as positive symbols with whom it is possible to identify or to sympathize; in other instances, serpents serve as negative symbols, representing opponents or antagonists of figures or principles with which it is possible to identify. Serpents also appear as ambivalent figures, neither wholly positive nor wholly negative in valence. An example of a serpent used as a positive symbol is Mucalinda, the king of snakes who shielded the Buddha from the elements as the Buddha sat in meditation. An example of a serpent used as a negative symbol is the snake who tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, as described in the Book of Genesis.

Snake (or serpent) jewelry has been worn since ancient times. Each era and part of the world seems to attribute its own symbolic meaning to this intriguing animal; eternal love, healing, fertility, wisdom and even immortality. In early Egyptian society it was the symbol of royalty and deity and the Romans regarded the snake as a symbol of everlasting love.

Closer to our times, in the Victorian era (roughly the 19th century) an entwined snake symbolized infinity and eternal love, so snakes were significant symbols. When Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, he gave her two snake rings, entwined together, which demonstrated the mutual communion of love that they felt for each other and symbolized an eternal life together.

Snake jewelry is best given as a symbolic gesture of good fortune, good health, and as a loving gift to a partner where the ring is a protective charm and represents the union of the couple and their eternal and never ending love for one another.

This impressive original Victorian bishops ring is the very one that was used in the movie "The Da Vinci code" based on the bestseller by Dan Brown. It was worn by Alfred Molino playing the role of Bishop Aringarosa.

A bishops ring is not an every day object in our inventory. In the over 20 years of experience in the antique jewelry trade we can recall to have purchased one only once before.

The ring is set with a huge citrine and is elaborately crafted with various symbols such as a bishops miter, crossed staffs and no less thenten crosses. Also recognisable are the trefoils outside at the bottom of the shenk, symbolizing Christian trinity (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit).

According to "The Church Visible", by James-Charles Noonan, Jr. (Viking), the bishop's ring is a sign of authority. In the earlier Code of Canon Law clerics who were not bishops were forbidden to wear rings. As a symbol of episcopal authority the ring first appeared in the third century. By 637 A.D. St. Isidore of Seville would write, "To the bishop at his consecration is given a staff; a ring likewise is given him to signify pontifical honor or as a seal for secrets". According to Noonan, the bishop's ring would later also take on the symbolic meaning that he was wedded to the Church. The cardinal's ring is given by the Holy Father at a Mass following his being named a cardinal.

The word "platinum" is derived from the Spanish "platina", which means "small silver". The first traces of platinum date from the Thebes epoch (about 7th century before JC), from when a small box was retrieved, adorned with a platinum ribbon.

During the 15th century, the Spaniards didn't like the little white granules that soiled their South American gold and used to throw them away. A platinum sample finally reached Europe in 1741, and was analyzed by sir Charles Wood, who didn't manage to melt it down. It was only when oxygen could be isolated (after its discovery in 1774), that people were finally able to increase the temperature of flames enough so as to melt platinum and really start to discover its particular properties: malleable, eternal brilliance, hardness superior to that of gold, inoxydability...

It was after the Napoleonic wars that the English managed to separate platinum from the other metals that were extracted from the platinum mines (palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, ruthenium). Around 1820, the Russians discovered huge ores in the Oural. Only from the beginning of the 20th century, platinum was being used in jewelry. Its use started to increase when scientists discovered its catalytic properties (its ability to speed up chemical reactions).

From then on platinum became a strategic industrial metal until the end of WWII. Today, the use of platinum is returning to the jewelry industry, but platinum has also a very wide range of industrial uses, including use in the treatment of some cancers.

A cute urban legend does its round: As platinum has not always been considered to be a precious metal, in Russia in the beginning of the 19th century, counterfeiters used platinum as the core for their "golden roubels", this because of platinum's high gravity. When, around 1870, platinum started to be recognized as a precious metal the price of it rose accordingly, it is told that roubels were then cut in half in the hope of finding platinum inside....

A bishops ring is not an every day object in our inventory. In the almost 30 years of experience in the antique jewelry trade we can recall to have sold only two before. (One of them was used in the movie "The Da Vinci code" based on the best seller by Dan Brown. It was worn by Alfred Molino playing the role of Bishop Aringarosa.)

There is something odd about this ring. Not the bishops ring itself but the ring that comes with it. Inside the bishops ring we found a silver ring hidden with in relief a gold wolf. Bishops rings are normally worn on gloves so their size is "a bit larger then normal". But to find another ring hidden into such ring puzzles us. A hidden ring with a non-Christian motif. What could be the story behind this? Why would a person wearing such ring find it important to hide an extra symbol to this high profile ring and hide it?

This particular ring is set with a huge gem amethyst in a beautiful velvetish dark sparkling color and is elaborately crafted with angels in high relief on both sides. The wings of the angels are enameled in a way that we can recognize as a neo-Egyptian style. Each angel holds a shield, one shield with the Chi Rho sign and the other shield with three letters PSV, most probably the initials of the Bishop.

The Chi Rho is one of the earliest forms of christogram, and is used by Christians. It is formed by superimposing the first two letters in the Greek spelling of the word Christ, chi = ch and rho = r. This beautiful ring manufactured in the 1910s is very comfortable to wear thanks to its oval and slightly domed shape. We really have the feeling that the ring nestles against the finger. It has at its center a line of 3 old mine European brilliant cut diamonds weighing .54 Carats highlighted by 14 old mine brilliant cut diamonds estimated .70 Carats and 16 most probably verneuil sapphires. All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting. The gemstones are set in platinum and show no defects or chips.

The top of the ring measures 25.0 mm (0.98 inch) x 18.4 mm (0.72 inch) and the total weight is 4.50 Grams. The US finger size is 7¼ and we are happy to resize it for free. The condition of this is ring is excellent.
